The marble statue of the Dying Slave is 2.15 meters high. It depicts a superbly young handsome man who falls into peace and blissful peace. His strong young body is engulfed in a rush of inner experiences. The nudity shows great vulnerability, and little resistance is shown in the silky contours of the arches, the extended left arm, and the relaxed abdomen. The left wrist is strapped to the back of the neck, and there is a band around the chest. The right leg pressed through is as contrary to the dying impression as the detached facial expression. There is also a partially shown monkey that is holding the man's left shin. This animal is the Latin symbol of artistic craft.

Dying Slave by Michelangelo Istaknut
The statue of the Dying Slave is one of six statues of slaves sculpted by Michelangelo for the tomb of Pope Julius II between 1513 and 1516. In 1546, Michelangelo gave this statue along with its companion statue, the Rebellious Slave, to Ruberto Strozzi, who in turn presented them to King François I of France. In 1794, the Rebellious and Dying Slaves were purchased for the French state, and have been preserved in the Museum Louvre in Paris ever since.
